On April 11, 1986, Astral Media officially launched the FUND (Foundation to Underwrite New Drama for pay-television), making it the first Canadian broadcaster to set up a national, non-profit private fund to support the development of film and made-for-pay-TV productions. In 1996, the foundation was renamed The Harold Greenberg Fund/Le Fonds Harold Greenberg (The Fund/Le Fonds) in honour of the late Harold Greenberg. At this time, the French-language Program was created to ensure French-language film and television creators also had equivalent access to such funding.
Now 21 years later, The Fund/Le Fonds has successfully established itself as Canada’s largest private funding agency for English and French-language film and television projects, having collectively invested over $58 million to date.
The English-language Program (Fund), with contributions from The Movie Network and Viewers Choice, provides reimbursable financial assistance for the development and production of feature films. The French-language Program (Fonds), with contributions from Astral Media, Super Écran and Canal Indigo, provides reimbursable financial assistance for the production of feature films and for the production of music-related special events and programs. As well, since December 2007, it has administered the MaxFACT funding program, with contributions from MusiMax, used to finance the production of music videos. The Fonds and Fund programs play a vital role in supporting film and television production in Canada: they are proud to present quintessentially Canadian stories.
